Collision Report Query and Location Update for Cities (WSDOT)
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
Annually, an estimated 30,000 collision reports require additional location analysis by city engineers. Unlike county
engineers who use the Electronic County Location Coding system, city engineers currently have no method for accessing
and correcting location information for collisions occurring in their jurisdiction. This leads to inconsistencies and
inaccuracies in city street location information that affect the ability to provide accurate and complete collision data
for a particular location within a city.
This project will develop a secured internet web site that will allow authorized staff from cities in Washington State
to review and edit up to a dozen data fields that pertain to location information for collisions occurring within their
jurisdiction. This project will incorporate many of the features that have been previously developed for county engineers
in the Electronic County Location Coding system. Once implemented, this capability will be available only for those cities
that request the access. Once WSDOT has completed processing a collision record, authorized city staff will then be able
to review the location data and make corrections as needed. This will improve the accuracy of the collision data, and help
ensure that safety improvement funds for construction and enforcement are spent in the exact areas that will benefit the most.
