The Washington Transportation Framework for GIS (WA-Trans) provides a statewide, standards-based method of location for transportation data. WA-Trans will include data regarding where all roads, rails, ferry routes and other transportation infrastructure are located. WA-Trans will facilitate identification of location based on route milepost, as state and county governments are used to doing, and street-address as county and city governments frequently use. Using location as a common element, data from disparate systems maintained at the various agencies can be integrated at low-cost. A common location method allows for evaluation of data that is collected by separate agencies.

The goal of WA-Trans is to develop and maintain a seamless statewide transportation dataset in the public domain for use in GIS. WA-Trans will use the best data available from municipal, county, tribal and state organizations across the state of Washington. Statewide business needs for this data have been documented and prioritized including significant traffic safety related needs. A data model, standards, architecture and processes have been completed and WA-Trans is working on various pilot projects to begin the process of collecting, translating, and integrating location data.

The WA-Trans architecture consists of a database, software utilities, standards, manual processes, organizational structures and agreements needed to maintain a continually improved dataset over time using data from providing organizations. Implementation of these elements will provide integrated transportation data about public roads, railroads, airports, ferry terminals and routed, port facilities and no-motorized transportation routes. In order to begin developing these components for the creating of WA-Trans, a series of pilot projects have been scheduled. Each pilot contributes to the development of plans for the statewide implementation while mitigating risks and keeping project investments manageable. Each pilot focuses on specific deliverables, both software and data, which, upon successful completion, will become part of the statewide implementation and maintenance of WA-Trans data. The pilots and high level scope information are available upon request.

Additional information regarding this project is available upon request.
